You should not have to choose between improving your health and eating in a way that fits your life

You may know what you are “supposed” to eat and still feel unsure about what will actually work when appetite changes, blood sugar concerns, busy schedules, culture, budget, and food preferences all pull in different directions. Alisha Bains, BSc, MSc, RD, is a registered dietitian in Waterloo who helps you turn complicated nutrition advice into practical choices that make sense in everyday life.

Alisha brings experience in weight management, lifestyle medicine, chronic disease prevention, Type 2 diabetes, and nutrition support for GLP-1 medications. Just as importantly, she understands that a plan can be scientifically sound and still fail if it does not fit your routines, energy, access to food, cooking confidence, or the meals you share with others. Whether you want help with weight, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, meal planning, vegetarian or vegan eating, or simply feeling more confident around food, she begins with your priorities rather than a prewritten menu. The goal is not a “perfect” diet. It is a realistic way of eating that supports your health and remains workable when life is busy.

Alisha Bains, BSc, MSc, RD, combines international dietetic experience with practical guidance you can use at home

Alisha provides comprehensive dietetic care across a wide range of nutrition concerns, with particular depth in GLP-1 nutrition support, metabolic syndrome management, and vegetarian and vegan diets. Her background spans Canada and the United Kingdom, where she has worked across specialist weight-management, lifestyle medicine, hospital, community, rehabilitation, and virtual-care settings.

That breadth matters because nutrition concerns rarely arrive one at a time. Changes in weight may overlap with blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, medications, appetite, stress, food access, culture, or previous dieting experiences. Alisha looks for those connections so your recommendations address the whole picture rather than adding another disconnected set of rules. Her style is practical, collaborative, and non-judgmental. She explains the reasoning behind each recommendation, helps you identify what is already working, and builds from there. You leave with clear priorities and skills you can use independently—not a plan that depends on constant supervision or foods you would never normally buy.

Your first appointment begins with the full picture, not a generic meal plan

Alisha starts by listening. She asks about your health history, medications, recent laboratory results where relevant, eating patterns, appetite, daily schedule, food preferences, cultural traditions, cooking demands, budget, and the changes you feel ready to make. She can also review biometric, dietary, and lifestyle information to identify practical areas where nutrition may support your broader goals.

Her approach to nutrition counselling draws on motivational interviewing and CBT-informed behaviour-change strategies. That means you are not simply told what to do. Together, you clarify what matters most, anticipate the situations that make change difficult, and choose steps that feel meaningful and achievable. Recommendations may involve meal structure, grocery planning, nutrient adequacy, symptom-aware food choices, or strategies for busy and low-energy days.

CARESPACE Weber North, Alisha’s nutrition guidance can also fit within coordinated, multidisciplinary care. When your goals involve medication, metabolic health, mobility, pain, stress, or another overlapping concern, she can work alongside the appropriate members of your healthcare team so your nutrition plan complements—rather than competes with—the rest of your care.

Training in Canada and the United Kingdom helps Alisha connect nutrition science to complex, real-world health needs

Alisha earned an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Brock University, building a strong foundation in human biology, physiology, and the science of health and disease. She then completed a Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition with Merit at London Metropolitan University, where she developed the clinical skills required to translate evidence into individualized nutrition care. She is a Registered Dietitian in Ontario and has also held registration in the United Kingdom.

Her professional experience includes working as a Specialist Dietitian within a Tier 3 weight-management service, supporting adults living with obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and related conditions, including those prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists. She has delivered virtual nutrition and general nutrition education to large groups, mentored new staff and dietetic students, and contributed to evidence-based recipe resources designed to make healthy eating more accessible. Earlier hospital, community, and rehabilitation experience exposed her to diabetes care, post-stroke nutrition, malnutrition risk, chronic illness management, food insecurity, and interdisciplinary practice—experience that helps her recognize when your nutrition needs require both precision and broader team support.

When GLP-1 medications, metabolic syndrome, or plant-based eating make nutrition feel more complicated, Alisha helps you make it manageable

In addition to comprehensive nutrition care, Alisha brings added depth to three areas where generic advice often falls short.

When you are taking a GLP-1–based medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, reduced appetite, early fullness, nausea, or changing food preferences can make it harder to eat enough of the foods your body still needs. Alisha helps you plan smaller, nutrient-dense meals; prioritize protein, fibre, and fluids; adjust meal timing; and find tolerable options on lower-appetite days. She also helps you think beyond the scale by supporting nutritional adequacy, muscle health, and eating habits that remain useful throughout treatment. Her role is nutritional: medication decisions stay with your prescriber, while your food plan is coordinated with the goals and guidance of your wider medical team.

For metabolic syndrome management, Alisha looks at the connected pattern rather than treating blood sugar, triglycerides or cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight as separate problems. Your plan may focus on consistent meals, fibre-rich carbohydrates, portions that match your needs, satisfying protein, unsaturated fats, sodium awareness, and changes that support cardiometabolic health without demanding an all-or-nothing diet. Progress is defined collaboratively and may include more stable eating, better energy, improved confidence with food, and support for the clinical targets you have established with your healthcare team.

If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet—or want to move in that direction—Alisha helps you build meals that are both nutritionally complete and enjoyable. She can guide protein variety and distribution while paying attention to iron, vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin D, iodine, and omega-3 fats. Recommendations can incorporate culturally meaningful foods, South Asian eating patterns, convenience options, and budget realities, so plant-based nutrition feels like an expansion of what you can eat rather than a growing list of restrictions.
