Foods to Avoid with Spondylolisthesis

Foods to Avoid with Spondylolisthesis

If you’re suffering from spondylolisthesis, you know firsthand the pain and discomfort that comes with this condition. Spondylolisthesis occurs when a vertebra in the spine slips out of place and onto the vertebra below it, causing pressure and compression on the nerves in the back, legs, and feet. While there are many treatments available to manage this condition like physiotherapy and chiropractic care, including diet changes, it’s important to know which foods to avoid to alleviate symptoms. In this article, we’ll explore some of the foods that can exacerbate spondylolisthesis symptoms, and suggest healthier alternatives that can promote healing.

Processed and High-Fat Foods: Processed and high-fat foods are known to cause inflammation in the body – and inflammation only exacerbates spondylolisthesis symptoms. If you’re experiencing pain and inflammation, try cutting back on processed foods and high-fat meats, such as bacon and red meat. Instead, opt for leaner proteins such as fish, poultry, tofu or tempeh.

Sugary Foods and Drinks: Sugary foods and drinks can increase inflammation in the body, causing more pain and discomfort for those with spondylolisthesis. Additionally, sugar can lead to weight gain, which can put added pressure on the spine. Swap out sugary beverages, such as soda and juice, for water or unsweetened drinks. And if you’re craving something sweet, try natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup.

Dairy Products: While dairy products are a good source of calcium, they are also high in saturated fats and can increase inflammation in the body. If you suffer from spondylolisthesis, consider swapping out dairy products for other calcium-rich foods such as leafy greens, almonds, and fortified plant milk. For those who can’t give up dairy entirely, try low-fat or non-fat dairy products.

Fried Foods: Fried foods such as french fries, onion rings, and fried chicken, can cause inflammation in the body, leading to additional pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, these foods can be hard to resist, so consider healthier alternatives such as baked or grilled vegetables, air-fried foods or roasted chicken as they are naturally low-fat.

Refined Grains: Refined grains such as white bread, pasta, and rice lack essential nutrients, and can spike your blood sugar, causing inflammation, and again, more pain. Opt instead for whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, whole-grain bread, and pastas. These foods are high in fiber and vitamins, and can help keep the digestive system moving, which is essential for those with spondylolisthesis.

Managing spondylolisthesis can be challenging, but by avoiding certain foods, you can alleviate pain and discomfort in the body. By avoiding processed and high-fat foods, sugary drinks, dairy products, fried foods, and refined grains, you can help reduce inflammation in the body and decrease the pressure on your spine. Instead, try incorporating lean proteins, natural sweeteners, calcium-rich plant based alternatives, baked or grilled vegetables, and whole grains into your diet to promote healing and reduce symptoms. Remember that every body is different, so it’s important to listen to your body and seek the advice and support of a healthcare professional, like a dietitian and naturopathic doctor, who can guide you in making the best choices for your unique needs.
