Best Ways to Treat a Contusion

best ways to treat a contusion

If you have ever incurred a contusion, you know the pain and discomfort it can bring. A contusion happens when you receive a hard blow or hit that causes bleeding under the skin and deep muscle tissue. The area that is affected turns purplish, sometimes accompanied by swelling and stiffness. While contusions can heal by themselves over time, there are still ways to help minimize the pain and promote faster recovery. In this blog post, we will be discussing some of the best ways to treat a contusion.

RICE method – This is the most common way to treat a contusion. The acronym stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Firstly, give your body time to rest by avoiding putting any weight or pressure on the area affected. Secondly, apply ice packs on the affected area for 20 minutes every hour several times a day. Thirdly, wrap the affected area firmly with a bandage to reduce swelling, but be careful not to wrap it too tightly, causing more discomfort and pain. Finally, elevate the affected area preferably above the heart level to help reduce the accumulation of fluids and blood in the injured area.

Physiotherapy – If you have a severe contusion, a physiotherapist can help you restore mobility and function. They can help you with exercises that can help improve blood circulation in the injured area, reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and reducing pain.

Chiropractic care – Another form of alternative therapy that can help manage the pain associated with contusions is chiropractic care. Using spinal manipulation and adjustments, chiropractors can help optimize your body’s healing potential, manage pain and inflammation, and promote muscle relaxation.

Massage – Massages have long been used to relieve muscle and joint pains. They are also effective when it comes to treating contusions. A deep tissue massage to the injured area can help stimulate blood circulation, break up scar tissue formation, decreasing inflammation, and promoting faster recovery.

Pain medication – In some cases, you may need to take pain medications to manage the pain associated with contusions. Doctors can prescribe Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or aspirin or acetaminophen. However, avoid over-reliance on these drugs as they can have adverse effects if taken in high doses for an extended period.

A contusion can cause excruciating pain and discomfort, but it doesn’t have to last long. There are several ways and treatment options to help you get back on your feet and reduce the pain associated with contusions. Applying RICE method to the affected area, seeking physiotherapy, chiropractic care, or massage can all help expedite the healing process. Always remember to give your body time to heal, rest when needed, and avoid excessive physical activity that may re-injure the affected area. If the pain persists, don’t hesitate to consult with a doctor or specialist.
