There are many causes of costochondritis

The exact cause of costochondritis is unknown, but some factors can contribute to or worsen the condition. These include injuries or chiropractic manipulation to the chest area, heavy physical labor, and chronic coughing. In some cases, people who are particularly physically active may be more prone to developing costochondritis due to repetitive use of a given muscle group in their sternovascular region. Fortunately, costochondritis typically resolves on its own with conservative treatments such as rest and heat therapy. Other therapies such as chiropractic care, physiotherapy, massage therapy or specific exercises may also help alleviate symptoms in some cases.

What is costochondritis?

Costochondritis is a type of chest pain caused by inflammation of the costochondral joint where the cartilage meeting the rib bones is located. Often, there is no identified cause for costochondritis although physical activity, infections, injuring the chest wall, certain types of arthritis, or other conditions may sometimes be associated with it.

What are the symptoms of costochondritis?

Symptoms of costochondritis can include sharp pain in the chest, localized tenderness in the ribs, and tenderness or swelling in the cartilage joining the sternum and ribs known as costosternal junction. The pain from costochondritis may worsen when you take a deep breath, sneeze, or cough; when touching the affected area; or when pressing on your chest. It is important to seek medical attention if the symptoms associated with this condition become severe or are accompanied by shortness of breath, chest tightness, or impaired cardiac functioning.
