Foods You Should Eat with Migraines and Headaches

If you’ve ever experienced a migraine you know how debilitating it can be. The intense pain can make it difficult to focus, work or even carry out everyday tasks. While there are several treatment options available including over-the-counter and prescription medications certain foods can help alleviate the symptoms of migraines and headaches. In this blog post, we’ll cover some of the best foods to eat to help prevent and treat migraines.

Magnesium-rich foods

One of the main causes of migraines is a magnesium deficiency. This essential mineral plays a crucial role in regulating nerve and muscle function as well as regulating blood sugar levels. Some food sources of magnesium include almonds, cashews, spinach, avocado and bananas. By adding these foods to your diet, you can help prevent migraines and also reduce the severity and frequency of headaches.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and mackerel. These healthy fats have been shown to reduce inflammation in the body, which can help alleviate migraine symptoms. Additionally, omega-3s may improve blood flow to the brain, which can also reduce the risk of migraines. If you’re not a fan of fish, you can also get your dose of omega-3s from chia seeds, flaxseed, and walnuts.

Ginger

Ginger has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for nausea and vomiting, both of which are common symptoms of migraines. Additionally, ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce the inflammation that triggers headaches. You can enjoy ginger tea, add sliced ginger to your meals or try taking a ginger supplement to help prevent migraines.

Dark chocolate

If you’re looking for an excuse to eat chocolate, here it is! Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the body. Additionally, dark chocolate contains a small amount of caffeine, which can provide some relief from headaches. Be sure to choose dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content to get the full benefits.

Hydration

Dehydration is a common trigger for migraines and headaches. It’s important to stay properly hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. You can also get your hydration from foods like watermelon, cucumber, and celery, which have high water content.

While food alone may not be enough to eliminate migraines and headaches, incorporating these foods into your diet can help prevent them from occurring and reduce their severity. Along with dietary changes, other treatment options like physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and working with a dietitian and naturopathic doctor can provide a comprehensive approach to managing migraines. By making these lifestyle changes, you can reduce the impact that migraines have on your daily life and get back to feeling your best.
