What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based integrative psychotherapy approach primarily used to effectively help individuals who have experienced psychological trauma. During EMDR sessions, a certified professional clinician collaborates with the client to identify distressing mental content related to traumatic life experiences then guides them in desensitizing these contents by assisting them with rapid bilateral eye movements. This process is believed to aid the individual in accessing the insight and learning needed to establish emotion regulation and ultimately resolves their hidden pains while increasing their emotional state. Research has found that EMDR can provide successful results in treating posttraumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, and phobias. EMDR has become more accepted among many practitioners as a treatment method that can produce positive outcomes for clients suffering from different kinds of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, low self esteem and relationship difficulties.

How does EMDR therapy work?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a psychotherapy approach developed to help people heal from trauma, such as combat-related PTSD or childhood abuse. This therapeutic method works by assigning specific physical movements, such as side-to-side eye movements, hand tapping, or sounds to rapidly desensitize a person’s emotional overload. As the patient alternately recalls the traumatic event and moves the eyes back and forth in tune with the physical stimulation provided, they are better able to process the emotions they felt during or shortly after the event. Through full EMDR processing, clients can move beyond their mental health symptoms and trauma-induced limitations to start living more fulfilling lives.

What are the benefits of EMDR therapy?

Unlike traditional approaches such as talk therapy, EMDR instead uses targeted eye movements to access memories, emotions, and bodily sensations associated with a traumatic event. By focusing on the sensory and cognitive responses to the trauma, EMDR can effectively process the distress related to that event. Not only can this reduce trauma symptoms such as flashbacks or intrusive thoughts, but it could also help heal underlying issues such as low self-esteem or poor interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, the effects of EMDR have been shown to persist over time following just 8-10 sessions of treatment. With so many advantages, it is not surprising that EMDR is quickly becoming a popular form of treatment for trauma survivors.

Are the outcomes of EMDR therapy permanent?

EMDR therapy is an effective treatment for a variety of issues, including anxiety and PTSD. Its growing popularity is attributed to the high success rate and long-lasting outcomes that clients experience. Those who have completed EMDR therapy often find tremendous relief and a heightened sense of wellbeing. In fact, many report that the effects of EMDR are permanent, though it may take some time to fully realize them. A hallmark characteristic of EMDR is that it helps to process distressing memories and emotions in a systematic way which leads to healing at a deep level. Research has demonstrated that this integrative approach can be very empowering for individuals in their personal growth journey–and its lasting effects make it an appealing choice for those looking for sustainable progress.

Who can benefit from EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy can be a powerful form of psychotherapy for individuals dealing with the lingering effects of trauma or other mental health issues. It is proven to help people overcome stress, depression, anxiety, addictions and phobias, as well as helping those who may have suffered from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in their life. EMDR works by accessing memories associated with trauma and creates a two-way communication process between the clinician and the person undergoing therapy—allowing them to work together to reprocess their experiences in order to better manage stressful emotions. This type of therapy has been shown to benefit children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens. Those affected by traumatic experiences often find that EMDR helps restore a sense of safety and stability within them faster than many traditional forms of therapy.
