What to Avoid with Arthritis

What to Avoid with Arthritis

Arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people all around the world. It causes inflammation and pain in the joints, making it difficult to move and function normally. While there’s no cure for arthritis, there are many ways to manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. However, some approaches may not be the best for every person with arthritis. In this article, we’ll explore some of the things you should avoid when you have arthritis to ensure better management of your condition.

Overdoing it with exercise

Exercise is essential for maintaining joint mobility and reducing arthritis pain. However, some patients may overdo it and put too much strain on their joints, leading to more inflammation and discomfort. It’s important to strike a balance between staying active and taking breaks when you need them. Try low-impact exercises like swimming, yoga, or cycling. It is advisable to consult your physiotherapist to guide you on what exercises are suitable and how long to spend working out.

Neglecting joint protection

Another mistake that people with arthritis make is neglecting joint protection. This can include actions like not using assistive devices or maintaining good posture to reduce pressure on the joints. Certain activities like carrying heavy loads or sitting on low seats may aggravate your arthritis pain. You can use supportive devices, like wearing a brace, using a cane or walker or using a raised toilet sits to help protect and reduce stress on the joints.

Ignoring dietary changes

Certain foods can exacerbate your arthritis symptoms, such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol and red meat. On the other hand, others can help reduce inflammation, such as fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, and fruits and vegetables rich in anti-inflammatory properties. Speak to a registered dietitian to help you determine which foods work best for your arthritis and any food allergies you may have.

Getting insufficient rest

Insufficient rest at night can make arthritis symptoms worse. Poor sleep can cause fatigue, which in turn increases pain. To help improve sleep, consider avoiding activities that stimulate your brain such as computer or phone screens for up to two hours before bed, or avoid outdoor activities that stimulate your senses before you hit the sack. Consider setting a sleep time routine, eating earlier and at consistent mealtimes, and reducing stressors that may be keeping you up at night, such as worries and pain.

Managing arthritis can be a complex task, but avoiding these common mistakes can help you better manage the symptoms of your condition. Remember, gentle exercises, joint protection, dietary changes and rest can lead to a better quality of life and prevent your arthritis from becoming serious. See a physiotherapist or chiropractor if you are experiencing joint pain and suspected arthritis and they will guide you on how to manage it. With the right approach, you can reduce pain and inflammation, improve joint mobility, and lead a more fulfilling life.
