What are the Different Types of Personality Disorders?

Our personalities guide how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. But for some people, their personalities lead to significant distress and dysfunction, resulting in what’s known as a personality disorder. Personality disorders are a group of mental illnesses that affect an individual’s ability to form healthy relationships, handle emotions and respond appropriately to different situations. In this blog, we will explore the different types of personality disorders and discuss their symptoms, causes and available treatments.

There are ten recognized types of personality disorders, grouped into three clusters based on their shared characteristics. The first cluster includes the odd and eccentric disorders, which are Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders. These disorders are characterized by odd thinking patterns, unusual beliefs, and social withdrawal. Individuals with Paranoid Personality Disorder may have unfounded suspicions and a pervasive distrust of others, while those with Schizoid Personality Disorder may have difficulty expressing emotions, relating to others, and engaging in activities for pleasure. Schizotypal Personality Disorder is marked by social and interpersonal deficits, cognitive distortions, and eccentric behavior.

The second cluster includes the dramatic, emotional, and erratic disorders, which are Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic Personality Disorders. These disorders are characterized by impulsivity, emotional instability, and intense interpersonal conflicts. Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder may display a disregard for others’ rights, laws, and safety, and engage in criminal behaviors. Borderline Personality Disorder is marked by intense and unstable relationships, mood fluctuations, and a pervasive fear of abandonment. Histrionic Personality Disorder is characterized by a need for attention, dramatic expression of emotions, and exaggerated behavior. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is marked by grandiosity, entitlement, and a lack of empathy for others.

The third cluster includes the anxious and fearful disorders, which are Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders. These disorders are characterized by social anxiety, fear of rejection, and perfectionism. Individuals with Avoidant Personality Disorder may avoid social interactions, experience feelings of inadequacy and hypersensitivity to criticism. Those with Dependent Personality Disorder may have extreme dependency needs, difficulty making independent decisions, and an excessive need for reassurance. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder is marked by an intense need for order, high standards of performance, and rigidity.

Psychotherapy is the primary treatment for personality disorders, particularly cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). CBT helps individuals identify and change negative thinking and behaviour patterns and develop healthy coping skills. DBT focuses on enhancing emotional regulation, reducing impulsivity, and improving interpersonal effectiveness. Psychotherapy may be combined with medication, such as antidepressants or antipsychotics, to manage specific symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, or mood swings. In severe cases where safety is a concern, hospitalization or residential treatment may be necessary.

Living with a personality disorder can be challenging, but it’s essential to remember that recovery is possible with the right treatment and support. Seeking professional help from a therapist or counsellor is the first step towards managing your symptoms and improving your quality of life, no matter the stage of personality disorder.
