There are many causes of dislocations

A dislocation is a very common injury that often happens due to some type of accident or trauma. It is caused by the bones in a joint being forced out of their normal position, typically due to an excessive amount of force coming from one direction. Causes can include something as simple as tripping on stairs or slipping on ice, to more extreme activities like contact sports or motor vehicle accidents. In some cases, such as with repetitive stress injuries, even simplest of tasks like typing can be a factor in causing a dislocation.

What is a dislocation?

A dislocation is an injury to a joint where the ends of two bones have come out of their normal alignment. This can occur in any joint throughout the body, but most commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, and knee. Dislocations can happen due to trauma or repetitive overuse activities such as athletics, and can be very painful. There may be swelling, loss of muscle function, and extreme tenderness at the site of injury.

What are the symptoms of a dislocation?

Common symptoms of a dislocation include an obvious deformity or misalignment of the joint, intense pain that increases when pressure is applied, swelling and redness around the affected area, numbness and tingling around it, restricted movement in the joint and sensations of grinding or clicking when trying to move the affected area. If you have any combination of these symptoms after an injury, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. It is possible for a dislocated bone to cause further damage if not treated quickly and adequately.
