See our Nurse Practitioner Team

Nurse Practitioners are regulated primary healthcare providers with advanced nursing education and the ability to assess, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe most medications, and manage ongoing health concerns. At CARESPACE, that scope is combined with a private, wellness-focused model built around longer appointments, preventative care, and a deeper understanding of your health.

Longer Appointments With Time to Understand Your Health

CARESPACE Nurse Practitioner services operate outside of OHIP, allowing for longer, more comprehensive appointments. Initial visits are often 60–90 minutes, giving your NP time to understand your health history, lifestyle, concerns, and goals, complete a relevant physical examination, and develop a personalized plan without rushing through the appointment.

Diagnosis, Testing, Prescriptions and Ongoing Care

Your Nurse Practitioner can assess and diagnose many health conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe most medications, and provide ongoing management for acute and chronic health concerns. Care can also include preventative screening and evidence-based guidance around nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, and other factors that influence your long-term health.

Open 8am–8pm Weekdays and 8am–6pm Weekends

CARESPACE clinics across Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge are open seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. You do not need a doctor’s referral to book with a Nurse Practitioner, and appointments can be booked directly with the CARESPACE team.

Primary Care Coordinated With Your Health Team

When your health needs additional expertise, your Nurse Practitioner can coordinate care with other CARESPACE professionals, including Registered Dietitians, Kinesiologists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and naturopathic doctors. Instead of managing separate providers on your own, you can have a connected team working together around the same health goals.

What Happens at Your First Personal Training Appointment

Your first visit is designed to give your Nurse Practitioner enough time to understand your health as a whole, not just the concern that brought you in.

1. A Complete Health History

Your Nurse Practitioner starts by reviewing your medical history, current medications, past diagnoses, family history, lifestyle, and any symptoms or concerns you are experiencing. You will also have time to talk about your health goals and anything you feel has been overlooked or needs a closer look.

2. A Clinical Assessment

Depending on why you are there, your Nurse Practitioner may complete a physical examination, check vital signs, review previous test results, or assess specific symptoms. The goal is to build a clear clinical picture before recommending treatment or next steps.

3. Testing When It Is Needed

If additional information is required, your Nurse Practitioner can order appropriate diagnostic testing and review the results with you. That may include bloodwork or other investigations based on your symptoms, health history, and clinical assessment.

4. A Clear Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

Your Nurse Practitioner explains what they found in straightforward language and discusses the options available to you. Your plan may include medication, further testing, lifestyle recommendations, monitoring, referrals, or other treatment based on your individual needs.

5. Follow-Up and Coordinated Care

You leave knowing what happens next. Your Nurse Practitioner will outline any follow-up that is needed and can coordinate with other members of your CARESPACE team when your health would benefit from additional support, including nutrition, exercise, rehabilitation, or other healthcare services.

Why Would Someone See a Nurse Practitioner?

People see a Nurse Practitioner when they need timely access to primary care, want more time to discuss a health concern, or need help managing an issue that does not require an emergency department. Nurse Practitioners can assess symptoms, diagnose many common conditions, prescribe most medications, order diagnostic testing, provide preventative care, and help manage ongoing health concerns.

A CARESPACE Nurse Practitioner can also be a good option when you want a more comprehensive look at your health, including factors such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, and lifestyle. With longer appointments and access to other CARESPACE healthcare professionals when needed, your care can extend beyond treating a single symptom to building a clearer plan for your overall health.

Is It Better to See a Nurse Practitioner or a Family Doctor?

Neither is better in every situation. Nurse Practitioners are regulated primary care providers who can assess and diagnose many health concerns, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe a wide range of medications, provide preventative care, and manage both acute and ongoing conditions.

A CARESPACE Nurse Practitioner may be a good choice when you want more time to discuss your health, need help with an ongoing concern, want preventative screening or wellness planning, or are looking for accessible primary care without feeling rushed. Because CARESPACE Nurse Practitioner services operate privately outside of OHIP, appointments can be longer and more comprehensive, with time to look at your health history, symptoms, lifestyle, and long-term goals together.

For concerns that require care outside a Nurse Practitioner’s scope, your NP can help coordinate the appropriate referral or next step.

Can a Nurse Practitioner Help with Weight Loss?

Yes. A Nurse Practitioner can help you understand the factors that may be making weight loss difficult and build a plan around your overall health rather than simply telling you to eat less and exercise more. That can include reviewing your medical history, medications, sleep, stress, activity levels, nutrition, and other factors that may be affecting your weight.

When appropriate, your Nurse Practitioner can also order diagnostic testing, identify health conditions that may be contributing to weight changes, discuss evidence-based treatment options, and prescribe medication when clinically indicated. At CARESPACE, that medical care can also be coordinated with Registered Dietitians, Kinesiologists, and other members of your healthcare team so nutrition, exercise, and medical support work together.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with advanced university education and expanded clinical training who can provide many of the same primary care services people commonly associate with a family doctor. Nurse Practitioners assess and diagnose health concerns, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe most medications, provide preventative care, and help manage both acute and ongoing conditions.

At CARESPACE, Nurse Practitioners provide private primary care with longer appointments and more time to understand the bigger picture of your health.

What a Nurse Practitioner Actually Does

A Nurse Practitioner listens to your concerns, reviews your health history, performs relevant physical assessments, and develops a treatment plan based on what they find. Depending on your needs, that may include diagnostic testing, medication, preventative screening, lifestyle recommendations, follow-up care, or referral to another healthcare provider.

The role is broader than treating a single symptom. Nurse Practitioners can also help monitor chronic conditions, review medications, identify health risks, and work with you on longer-term goals related to sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, and overall wellness.

What Training Does a Nurse Practitioner Have?

Nurse Practitioners are regulated healthcare professionals in Ontario. They begin as Registered Nurses and complete additional graduate-level education and advanced clinical training before qualifying to practise as Nurse Practitioners.

That advanced preparation allows them to take on a broader scope of care than a Registered Nurse, including diagnosing many conditions, ordering diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications within their scope of practice.

Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse? What the Titles Mean in Ontario

Both are regulated nursing professionals, but their scopes are different.

A Registered Nurse provides assessment, nursing care, education, monitoring, and support across many healthcare settings. A Nurse Practitioner has additional education and an expanded scope that includes diagnosing health conditions, ordering and interpreting tests, prescribing most medications, and independently managing many aspects of primary care.

That distinction matters when you are looking for someone who can do more than provide nursing support. At CARESPACE, your Nurse Practitioner can assess your concern, investigate it, and build a treatment plan within one ongoing care relationship.

What Nurse Practitioner Care Can Include

Nurse Practitioners provide comprehensive primary care that can cover everything from a new symptom to long-term health management. The exact care you receive depends on your health history, concerns, and goals.

Assessment and Diagnosis

A Nurse Practitioner can review your symptoms, medical history, medications, lifestyle, and relevant risk factors, perform an appropriate physical assessment, and diagnose many common acute and chronic health conditions.

Diagnostic Testing

When more information is needed, your Nurse Practitioner can order appropriate diagnostic tests and use the results to guide your care. Testing may help clarify the cause of symptoms, monitor an existing condition, or identify health risks before they become larger problems.

Prescriptions and Treatment

Nurse Practitioners can prescribe most medications and develop treatment plans within their scope of practice. Treatment may also include lifestyle recommendations, monitoring, preventative care, or coordination with another healthcare professional when additional expertise is needed.

Preventative and Ongoing Care

You do not need to wait until something is wrong to see a Nurse Practitioner. Appointments can also focus on preventative health, screening, medication reviews, lifestyle factors, and ongoing management of conditions that benefit from regular follow-up.

Coordinated Healthcare

At CARESPACE, Nurse Practitioner care can be connected with other services such as nutrition, kinesiology, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and naturopathic medicine. When several factors are affecting your health, your providers can work together rather than treating each concern in isolation.

Does OHIP or Insurance Cover Nurse Practitioner Appointments in Ontario?

CARESPACE Nurse Practitioner appointments are not covered by OHIP. Our Nurse Practitioners operate privately outside the public system, which allows for longer appointments and more time for comprehensive assessment, prevention, treatment, and ongoing health planning.

Nurse Practitioner services are often covered by extended health benefit plans, commonly under nursing services, but coverage varies by insurer and plan. CARESPACE offers direct billing to most major insurance providers when your plan includes the service. It is always worth confirming your coverage before your appointment.

You do not need a physician referral to book with a CARESPACE Nurse Practitioner. You can book directly whenever you need care.
