Frequently Asked Questions about CARESPACE Waterloo GoodLife

The health centre is located at 270 Weber Street North, in Waterloo, right inside the GoodLife Fitness building. We are perfectly situated to serve the university community, just a short walk, bike ride, or bus trip from the main campuses of both the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. We are also not far from major athletic facilities like the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex and the Stork Family YMCA. This central location makes us the most convenient health and wellness hub for students, faculty, and anyone with an active lifestyle in the university district.

No, not at all! While our location inside GoodLife Fitness is a great convenience for gym members, you absolutely do not need to be a member to access our services. The health centre is open to the entire community. CARESPACE operate as a distinct health centre within the building. Everyone is welcome to book an appointment with any of our practitioners, whether you’re a student, a local resident, or just looking for expert, coordinated healthcare.

The CARESPACE model of coordinated care is designed for exactly this situation. If you come in with a sports injury, your journey will likely start with our Physiotherapist, who will perform a thorough assessment to diagnose the issue. But our care goes deeper. Your physiotherapist will collaborate with our Registered Massage Therapist to address soft tissue restrictions and speed up healing. They’ll work with our Kinesiologist to develop a sport-specific active rehabilitation program to rebuild your strength safely. Our Nutritionist can provide a plan to support tissue repair and reduce inflammation, while our Mental Performance coach can help you stay positive and focused through your recovery. It’s a complete, 360-degree approach to getting you back to your sport faster and more resilient than before.

This is one of the most common issues we see from students at UW and WLU. The great thing about our model is that you don’t have to figure it out alone. You could start with either a Chiropractor or a Physiotherapist. They will assess you to find the root cause of your pain. From there, our coordinated team gets to work. They might recommend Registered Massage Therapy to release the chronic muscle tension in your shoulders. Our mission is to help you achieve your goals, and that includes being able to study pain-free.

Exam time is incredibly stressful, and we have a coordinated approach to help you manage it. CARESPACE Counselling services can provide you with effective, evidence-based strategies to manage anxiety and improve your focus. Registered Massage Therapy is a fantastic way to lower stress hormones, relieve physical tension, and improve your sleep quality, which is crucial for memory and performance. A Naturopathic Doctor can also offer natural support for your nervous system and provide advice on nutrition and supplements that can help you feel more resilient and focused during this high-pressure time. We work together to provide you with comprehensive support for both your mind and body.

Most of the services we offer, such as Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, and Counselling, are typically covered by extended health insurance plans, including the student plans offered through the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. While we don’t offer direct billing, we make reimbursement simple. After your appointment, we’ll provide you with a detailed receipt that has all the information you need to easily submit a claim to your insurance provider yourself. Every plan is different, so we always recommend that you check with your specific insurance provider to confirm the details of your coverage. Your practitioner will be happy to answer any billing questions you may have.

That’s a great question. In our coordinated care model, they work as a team. A Physiotherapist will typically lead the initial phase of your recovery. They are licensed to diagnose the injury, use hands-on manual therapy techniques to restore movement, and manage the acute symptoms like pain and swelling. A Kinesiologist is a movement specialist who often leads the next phase. They focus on active rehabilitation, designing and guiding you through a specific exercise program to rebuild your strength, endurance, and sport-specific skills. They work together seamlessly. Your physiotherapist provides the diagnosis and hands-on care, and your kinesiologist provides the expert guidance to get you back to peak performance.

No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to book an appointment with any of our practitioners. We are a direct-access clinic, meaning you can book with any of our services at your convenience. Our practitioners are primary healthcare providers for their respective disciplines and are fully qualified to perform initial assessments and develop a treatment plan. While a referral isn’t needed to see us, some extended health insurance plans might require a doctor’s note for reimbursement. It’s always a good idea to check with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage details.

We know a student’s schedule is packed, so we make booking an appointment as easy as possible. We offer extended hours to fit around your classes, labs, and practices. CARESPACE is open from 8 AM to 8 PM Monday to Friday, and 8 AM to 6 PM on weekends. You have two convenient ways to book: you can call our central reception team during our business hours to speak with a live person, or you can visit our website anytime to use our simple online booking system, which is available 24/7. Our goal is to make great healthcare accessible and convenient for you.

Absolutely. We are proud to serve many students from the Conestoga College Waterloo Campus. We understand that your programs can be just as demanding as those at the nearby universities, often involving long hours of study or hands-on practical work that can lead to physical and mental strain. All our services, from physiotherapy for postural pain to counselling for managing academic stress, are a perfect fit for Conestoga students. Our location is easily accessible from your campus, and our flexible hours are designed to work around your class schedule. We are committed to being a health resource for all post-secondary students in the area.

Our clinic is incredibly convenient for anyone living in University Downs or the surrounding student housing areas. We are just a short walk, bus ride, or bike ride away, located right on Weber Street North. Many of our clients from your neighbourhood find it easy to stop in for an appointment before or after classes, or to combine their visit with a workout at GoodLife Fitness. Being so close means you can get the care you need without a long commute, making it simple to fit into your busy academic schedule.

That’s great to hear, as we are perfectly positioned to support families who use those fantastic local facilities. The Stork Family YMCA and Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex are cornerstones of our community’s active lifestyle, and our services are designed to complement the activities you enjoy there. Our physiotherapists and massage therapists can help with recovery after a long swim, and our chiropractors can address any aches and pains from skating or other rec league sports. For kids and teens involved in programs there, our kinesiologists can develop strength and conditioning plans to prevent injuries and improve performance. Think of us as your dedicated health partner, just minutes away from your favourite community centres.
