Spondylolisthesis is a condition that affects the spine causing one vertebra to slip forward over the one beneath it. This can cause a range of symptoms including back pain, muscle weakness and tingling or numbness in the legs. The severity of these symptoms depends on the stage of spondylolisthesis the patient is experiencing. In this blog post we will examine the four stages of spondylolisthesis and look at how physiotherapy and chiropractic care can help manage the condition.

Stage 1: This is the mildest form of spondylolisthesis. In this stage, the slip is only between 1% and 25%. Most people with stage 1 spondylolisthesis do not experience any symptoms. However, patients who do experience pain or discomfort may benefit from physiotherapy or chiropractic care. Treatment may involve exercises to strengthen the muscles in the back, abdominal muscles and hips. Chiropractic adjustments can also help reduce stress on the affected vertebrae and alleviate pain.

Stage 2: At this stage, the slip is between 26% and 50%. In addition to the symptoms experienced in stage 1 patients may also experience numbness or tingling in the legs. Physiotherapy and chiropractic care can still be beneficial at this stage. Patients may require exercises that are more focused on building strength and improving posture. Chiropractic care can also help reduce pressure on the nerves that cause tingling or numbness.

Stage 3: At this stage the slip is between 51% and 75%. Patients may experience severe back pain, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking. Physiotherapy and chiropractic care can still be used to manage the symptoms of spondylolisthesis. However, patients with stage 3 spondylolisthesis may also require surgery to stabilize the spine and prevent further slipping.

Stage 4: This is the most severe form of spondylolisthesis. In this stage, the slip is greater than 75%. Patients may experience a loss of bladder or bowel control, severe muscle weakness and difficulty walking. Surgery is often required at this stage. However, physiotherapy and chiropractic care can still be used as part of the recovery process to help patients regain strength and mobility.

Spondylolisthesis can be hard to heal as it is a painful and debilitating condition that affects the spine. However, physiotherapy and chiropractic care can help manage the symptoms of spondylolisthesis and improve overall quality of life. By understanding the four stages of spondylolisthesis patients can work with their healthcare providers to develop a treatment plan that is right for them. Whether through exercise, chiropractic adjustments, or surgery, there are options available to help manage the condition and improve daily function.
