What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be Type-2 Diabetes. According to “Diabetes Canada”, more than 6 million Canadians have prediabetes.

What is the cause of prediabetes?

The hormone insulin allows your body to use sugar (glucose) converted from carbohydrate in the foods that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. High sugar diets, obesity, high stress, and inactivity can cause your cells to become resistant to the action of insulin. This result is higher than normal blood sugar readings.

How will prediabetes affect my life?

Chronic high blood sugar can cause damage to heart, blood vessels, and kidneys, etc.  This process may already be starting for people with prediabetes, and it worsens for those with diabetes. Some symptoms of high blood sugar are: increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision and headaches. Without lifestyle changes, prediabetes can lead to Type-2 diabetes, a very serious condition.

Complications tend to increase over time; the longer you have diabetes or prediabetes, the more likely you are to experience other associated health problems. This means that acting soon is important.  Even just delaying onset of the disease can help your health.

Is there a cure for prediabetes?

In some cases, your family doctor may prescribe medications. Fortunately, improving your diet, maintaining a healthy weight, managing your stress and pursuing an active lifestyle can bring blood sugar levels back to normal for most people.
