What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of muscle, joint, tissue, or nerves through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, and fitness promotion. People who are qualified to perform this type of rehabilitation are called physiotherapists or physical therapists.

Physiotherapists work independently or in collaboration with doctors to assess, treat and manage pain. They also manage injuries and mobility problems. Physiotherapists work by putting their clients through rehabilitation and pain management programs to restore whole-body functionality and eliminate pain.

Besides rehabilitation, physiotherapists also provide health education to prevent injuries in healthy people or relapse in recovering patients. They also work with people with disabilities to promote independence and improve their quality of life.

Why should you see a Physiotherapist?

Sports, work, or play. Injuries can happen any where to anyone. In fact, millions of people in Canada and worldwide suffer from bodily pains in their muscles, nerves, joints, and tissue. If you are part of this statistic or have old injuries that keep flaring up, it may be time to see a physiotherapist. Pain in any part of the body prevents you from enjoying life as you should. Therefore, knowing how to deal with it is essential to improve your quality of life.

Physiotherapy is an effective evidence-based approach to treating and managing chronic pain, injury prevention, and disability management. Physiotherapy can reduce the need for surgery; physiotherapists are commonly involved with post-surgery patients but they can also help prevent the need for surgery in the first place if you start working with a physiotherapist soon after an injury.

For seniors or those who suffer from chronic pain due to injuries or aging may find they have lost their independence. If you want to avoid in-home care or assisted living facilities, working with a physiotherapist may work for you. A physiotherapist will help increase your strength, reduce pain, and help you learn to do everyday tasks yourself. With conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis, physiotherapists are essential in helping people manage these conditions for a longer, happier life.
